Mărțișor

A traditional Romanian custom (but also celebrated in Moldova and Bulgaria), "Mărțișor" (basically translates to little March) is a red and white string from which a small decoration is tied, and which is offered to girls/women on the 1st day of March (but it can be offered throughout the entirety of March) to celebrate the beginning of spring and it's a symbol of appreciation, friendship, love and respect; the talisman takes the form of different shapes (the most popular are those associated with good luck charms such as chimney cleaners, four-leaf clovers, horseshoes and even the harbringer of spring, the snowdrop). It is supposed to be worn on coats, on the left side of the chest, close to the heart, but it can also come in the form of bracelets. It is believed that the one who wears the red and white string will be healthy and lucky the rest of the year.
