Terms of endearment

It may be that I am just really unused to them .. but I get prickly and wary when strangers use terms of endearment such as “darling”, “baby”, “sweetheart (or sweetie)”, “Honey” etc. There’s maybe only a handful of people on this planet that can get away with using an endearment on me without me saying “I’m not your ___ that makes me uncomfortable”. Endearments are earned with trust. It’s also amazing to me how after setting this boundary how many people delete the conversation/ghost me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hate when strangers do that in a work environment...it's patronizing and demeaning...like taking me from an intelligent professional to a child that needs to be patted on the head. Ugh 🙄 In a getting to know someone pre-dating environment it's usually the sign of a player. I get the same way when people that don't or barely know me call me Lis (Lees).

That's 100% valid. I feel the same way too when someone randomly starts hitting on me. Its awkward and I dont know how to confront a stranger on it. Sometimes though I think there's contexts where I'm okay with a stranger using terms of endearment. Like if a nice old lady says "thank you. Aren't you a dear. See you later sweetie." . I wonder if I might feel less upset by it if there weren't so much social implications with pet names and terms of endearment. Like maybe if someone said "hey what up mr.armoire" I might not feel upset. Confused, but not upset. Maybe the old lady using terms of endearment registers as something different in my head?

I went to a dinner this morning, and the waitress said "sit wherever you want sweetie". Now should I feel offended and set her straight next time?
